OR Ferrosi

"The days when the mention of Outdoor Research first brought to mind those classic gators are beginning to fade!", one tester declared after taking this shell from one epic weekend to another. Our testers have been out playing hard this spring, and took the Ferrosi along for the ride.

Spring in the Colorado Rockies can be brutally unpredictable, and while this is not the most waterproof of coats, it does well enough for the brief shower. It will keep you dry while you sprint for cover, as noted by a tester at last weekend’s Teva Mountain Games as the weather repeatedly turned toward wet.

Outdoor Research Ferrosi HoodyMade with the dependable Cordura fabric, the Ferrosi acts as a windbreaker, but lacks the crinkly feeling and noise we might normally associate with them. It’s soft, and lost wrinkles quickly in a multitude of scenarios—it was tossed in numerous packs a bit on the damp side, sat on for several hours when a very wet dog decided the front seat was his, and used as a rather dubious pillow when an unexpected late-night bivy demanded something softer than a rock. It failed to snag, and passed the durability test of our climbing testers with flying colors.

When a chill wind demanded a cover-up for a morning run up to Telluride’s famous Bridal Veil Falls the Ferrosi allowed for more than adequate breathability while blocking the dust-ridden breeze that whipped around the valley floor all week.

The fit works well on a girl’s figure, and the sizing was right on for our testers; the women’s small fit perfectly on a 5’4" and 110lb tester. Stretchy enough to easily fit a light insulated layer underneath, it latches down tight with the single waist drawcord. Compact enough to fold it into it’s own pocket (and rocking a convenient biner loop), it was considered to perhaps be the perfect belay jacket after hauling it up long routes in Colorado’s Eldorado Canyon one afternoon. The hood fit easily over a helmet, and it kept the wind out with both comfort and style. Your tunes will find a convenient home in the small arm pocket to help your feet keep moving on those difficult-to-rally days.

The verdict? With the seemingly endless options for lightweight shells it can be hard to find one that’ll look good on both the mountain and the street. The Ferrosi, while rather sleek for a simplistic shell, may not conjure up images its implied namesake, but instead perhaps that of the dependable Subaru. With its competitive price-point and everyday capability, it might just be the one for you.
